The car,
2 door Coupe body using a rear wheel drive setup.
The 180b's stock L18T engine, a 1.8 ltr. 4 cylinder twin SU carb engine, is not suitable for my project so I had to search for a replacement. Experience with the Volvo turbo engine's made the choice for a turbo engine obvious. Investigating the Nissan turbo engine options the choice for a CA18DET eventually turned out to be the best option. Other options were the SR20DET and the FJ20ET engine but availability and pricing ruled those engine's out.
I aquired a damaged CA18DET engine very cheap. After taking apart the engine the damaged turned out to be minimal and a 1 mm cylinder overbore cleared the damage in one of the cylinder wall's. I aquired Arias forged pistons for a 1 mm overbore to replace the stock pistons of which one was damaged. The block was bored and honed, crank regrinded and balanced. Rods shotpeened, balanced and the small end bearings replaced and stronger rod big end bearings were ordered. The head was left stock, valves were reseated with minor change to the 3 angle valve cut. To clear the steering box I ordered an "upside down" turbo exhaust manifold with a Garrett T3 connection flange instead of the stock T25 manifold. The turbo will be situated next to the head instead of hanging from the manifold next to the block. Turbo choice not determined yet.
For the EMS I'm going to use an Electromotive TEC3 system which I aquired a few years ago for use with the 2400GT. Being a 6 cylinder I needed to exchange the 6 ignition coil setup of the TEC3 for a 4 coil setup, all other parts were already available.
The fuel system setup needs to be changed. The high pressure part will use a Bosch pump coming from a small home made anti surge tank. The small tank will be fed using a low pressure high capacity feed pump.
The 5 speed gearbox of the S12 donor vehicle will be used and maybe the differential of this car will follow.
For the front suspension I converted the S12 struts to a coilover setup using self made thread sleeves and KW 2.5" race springs. I installed adjustable Koni shock cartridges originally for Toyota AE86. By using the struts I also could convert the front rotors and calipers to the S12 setup which are ventilated with better calipers. The rear axle remains to be seen, a drum to rotor conversion is considered.
